Doug Kirk Kirby 25 Regatta: Sailing Instructions
The Barrie Yacht Club has a long established racing program, recognized by many as the best yacht racing club on the lake. We have a full schedule of windward-leeward style racing every Wednesday evening and medium to long distance races on weekends, typically combined with the inter-club Lake Simcoe Interclub Series (LSIS). The racing program runs from mid-May to mid-October. Boats usually leave the docks on Wednesday nights between 5:45 and 6:00 PM. Some weekend races start as early as 10 AM.
The BYC Regatta Committee organizes and runs the races, which use moveable racecourse marks and a Committee boat for starts and finishes. While racers at BYC certainly have a lot of fun out on the water, there is also a lot of friendly competition as well. The races are run under a handicapping system known as PHRF, which allow a number of different types of boats to participate in the same race. Races are scored on a corrected-time basis. All results are posted on this web site and trophies/flags are handed out for the top finishers in each class.
The Club has very active flying sail (spinnaker class) and white sail fleets. Our fleet currently has a good number of similarly rated Kirby 25 and Olson 25 boats, which makes for exciting racing, particularly around the marks! We also have a number of Tanzer 22 participants as well as a wide range of other boats ranging from 22 to 33 feet in length. Races are run according to the current racing rules (posted below).
If you are interested in crewing; joining the club as an Associate Member will allow you to make the social contacts with skippers and other members, which will allow you to participate regularly. Boat skippers are also occasionally in need of non-member crew, who can add their name to a crew list posted at the clubhouse. We do not accept crew postings over the web site or phone – come on down on a Wednesday and speak to a member (preferably before 5:30 PM)
